TRANSFORM FEAR INTO LOVE

Updated: Mar 19, 2020

This are intense times, with a lot of personal & collective fear coming up to the surface. The COV-19 pandemic is a real thing, and we need to take extra precautions and make adjustments in our lives to manage what is happening. It is ok to feel fear, it is a natural and normal response to a situation like we are living in right now. But there is a difference between healthy fear and neurotic fear. Healthy fear presents so that you can protect yourself, assess the situation at hand and act accordingly. Neurotic fear is holding on to the fear even though the threatening situation is no longer present or reacting out of context from a present dangerous situation.

Fear, like all emotions, is energy, and it has a flow. When we are happy, the flow of the energy goes up, when we are sad, the flow of the energy goes down, when we are angry, the flow of the energy wants to move forward and when we are scared the flow of the energy either freezes, wants to run away or wants to fight. All energies need to complete their flow so that they can be transformed into love, power and wisdom. The energy flow of fear needs to move to complete itself and transform. People that are not aware of their unprocessed fears, might be acting out and behaving in ways that are hurting themselves and others. So I invite you, that we start to pay attention to the emotion of fear, to be aware of it, acknowledge it and give it space to transform.

Here is a simple exercise that can help you do just that:

1. BE AWARE: first we need to recognize the emotion in our bodies, stand with your hip width apart, take a couple of deep breaths in and out, and scan your body. Try to feel where in your body you feel fear. You don't need to change anything, just observe and feel. If you find it hard to locate the emotion, you can try voicing it with these phrases: "I am scared", "I have fear" and/or "I feel fear".

2. SHAKE: once you have recognized the emotion in your body and voiced it, now shake your whole body for 5-10 min. Shaking is a great technique to self regulate your nervous system. Think of when a kid gets scared in a hunted house or a scary story, they shout and shake, and actually enjoy it. Also think about how a dog shakes after it encounters something scary. Shaking is a natural movement for all animals even humans.

3. TRANSFORM: after you have shaken and release the energy from your body, stand still, take a couple of deep breaths in and out. place one hand on top of your heart and one hand on your belly and repeat the phrase "I AM LOVE". While you do this, imagine a beautiful bright light in the centre of your heart, once you have established this image, allow the light to expand all over your body & around you creating a cocoon of loving protection.
